After five years after the gruesome k!II!ng of their four-year-old son, Master God-Gift Odoki, the Bayelsa State Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality and Other Related Matters investigating extra-judicial killings, has recommended that the sum of N16 million be paid to the family.
Godgift was shot dé@d on October 22, 2016 alongside one other person during a crossfire between the police and a gang of cultists at Ekeki area of Yenagoa.
The late God-Gift was said to be playing outside his father’s compound, when an officer of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Patrol team shot and k!IId him in cold bl00d.
The Panel also recommended that the sum of N15 million be paid to the family of Chibuzor Okere, a 22-year-old carpenter, who was also shot dé@d by the same trigger-happy officer of the defunct SARS Patrol Team.
Speaking to newsmen after the judgement and recommendation, Mr. Somina JohnBull, counsel to the Odoki and Okere families, expressed joy on the outcome of the judgement and recommendation, saying since the incident happened, both families have been seeking justice.
Mr. JohnBull however expressed sadness that the officer responsible for both is yet to be prosecuted, insisting that the families are seeking for his prosecution to reduce their pain and to act as a source of caution so that other Nigerians would not suffer the same fate.
On their part, Mr. Thank-God Odoki and Mr. Ugochukwu Okere, father and brother to the deceased persons, thanked the panel for a thorough job.
They however stressed the need for justice to be served on the accused police officer to serve as a lesson to other officers who are always in the habit of unprofessional conduct while on duty.
